We ate from the buffet at Vegeatery in the early evening of Sunday 16 May. We are both vegan and all of the savoury items that night turned out to be vegan, though nothing was marked and we had to ask. We had a choice of four/five one pot-type dishes plus a flavoured couscous, rice and a bowl of mixed leaves. There was also a welcome pot of home-made hummus and we were offered pittas to accompany. The main dishes included sosage casserole, a pumpkin dish and something beany. They all had a nice flavour and whilst nothing was particularly memorable we felt quite happy and full.
At £8.99 for the buffet we thought it a bit on the pricey side, especially as this didn’t include a drink. Our biggest disappointment though – the usual one for vegans sadly – was having no choice of pudding. Not even a boring fruit salad! For the dairy eating veggies there were some yummy looking profiteroles and a plate of muffins. We don’t appreciate having to go without pudding in 2010 as there are lots of easy pudding options (crumble, choc mousse, tofu cheesecake for example). We also reckon we shouldn’t pay the same price if we can’t eat all the dishes.
Vegeatery is a fairly typical ‘homely’ veggie restaurant – imagine your elderly aunt’s front room. We aren’t that keen on this style, which feels a bit 1980s. However the welcome was warm enough and we hope they do well. If we had a couple of tips it would be: 1) label your dishes, 2) have at least one vegan pudding on offer 3) drop the price to £7.50, which feels more realistic for what’s on offer 4) consider swapping the ‘homely’ furniture/decor for something a bit cleaner and more modern.
We are very likely to return next time we are in the north west to support the business and because we don’t have to ask boring questions about what’s in the food. Overall score for the experience 6.5/10.
