As part of the Manchester Food and Drink Festival (MFDF) Grow Your Own theme, we are proud to announce our first ever Urban Harvest Festival! In association with the Allotment Association, Food Futures and Urbis, Exchange Square will be the setting for all things home-grown as we bring you the chance to learn more about this fascinating area and the surrounding issues at this unique event:

Start the day with a breakfast talk at Urbis with Britain’s leading organic gardener Bob Flowerdew. The Social at Urbis will take place 9am – 10am with ‘Bob Flowerdew and the Urban Gardener’. Bob has been answering questions on BBC Radio 4’s ‘Gardener’s Question Time’ for over a decade and this breakfast conversation is an opportunity to get up close and personal and find out more about organic methods and how we can get more from flowers fruit and veg living in the City. An organic breakfast will be served (£3, call 0161 605 8220, visit Urbis shop or email louise@foodanddrinkfestival.com for more details/tickets).

Following this, the MFDF Urban Harvest Festival Marquee will be opened by Bob at 10am – a further chance for you to ask questions and get your hands on signed copies of his book. Inside, the local allotment societies will present a harvest display of produce, members of the society will be on hand to discuss growing your own food at home and obtaining allotments and other partners will also be on site with related information (including Food Futures, Friends of the Earth and The Soil Association). If looking and learning about home grown produce isn’t enough, Northern Quarters favourite Soup Kitchen will be on site to whisk up soups from the produce so that you can taste the difference too (for free)!

At 11:30am – 12pm The Giant Pumpkin Competition will take place, judged by Bob! To enter please email louise@foodanddrinkfestival.com or call 0161 228 0091 (http://tinyurl.com/p2zc6). The winner will receive a signed copy of Bob’s book as well as a meal for 2 at MFDF Restaurant of the Year 2005, The Market Restaurant!

At 12.30pm MFDF’s first ever Vegetable Monster Competition will be judged!
Entrants must be under 16 (http://tinyurl.com/mn4kq). The winner will receive tickets for the whole family to dine at Yang Sing Restaurant, followed by a magical night at The Palace Theatre to see Alice in Wonderland!

This is a truly unique opportunity to experience organic and grow your own culture in the heart of the City! For more information on any of the above, please visit the Festival website or contact Louise on 0161 228 0012.
