A PONY sanctuary is desperately trying to raise funds to feed its animals before winter brings a shortage of hay.

Parkgate Pony Sanctuary, which rescues unwanted horses, says the bad weather means the hay harvest cannot be brought in and the difficulties could lead to more ponies being abandoned this winter.

The charity is holding an open weekend to try and raise cash to pay for the winter feed.

The event has already been cancelled once this year due to bad weather, but was going ahead this weekend.

Gymnasts will perform on horseback and there will be a fancy dress compet-ition and a fun dog show for visitors.

Entertainers dressed as knights, and music and craft stalls will also be on show between 11am and 5pm today and tomorrow at the sanctuary in Boathouse Lane, Parkgate, and costs £1.50 per family.
