Medical experiments on monkeys and primates are to be banned following a landmark EU move.

There will be an immediate end to tests on all great apes – chimpanzees, orangutans and gorillas.

Experiments on other wild apes and those bred in captivity will be phased out over time.

Jan Creamer, of Animal Defenders International which proposed the move, said: “We are delighted. This historic decision to protect primate nations from the laboratory animal trade is set to reverberate around the world.”

More than half of MEPs, 393, voted for the resolution which automatically triggers its adoption.
