In light of recent accusations against Al Gore that heâ€™s not doing enough to â€œwalk the walkâ€, PETA has a suggestion that could help with that issue: Go vegetarian.
The animal rightâ€™s group recently sent a letter to the former Vice President encouraging him to drop meat and help curb emissions generated by the livestock industry. From the release,
â€œThe effect that our meat addiction is having on the climate is truly staggering. In fact, in its recent report â€œLivestock’s Long Shadow – Environmental Issues and Options,â€ the United Nations determined that raising animals for food generates more greenhouse gases than all the cars and trucks in the world combinedâ€
The group goes on and points to a recent study conducted at the University of Chicago in which those who switched to a vegan diet did more to combat global warming than those that switched to a hybrid from a conventional gas vehicle.
â€œâ€˜The single best thing that any of us can do to for our health, for animals, and for the environment is to go vegetarian,â€ says PETA President Ingrid E. Newkirk. â€œThe best and easiest way for Mr. Gore to show his critics that he’s truly committed to fighting global warming is to kick his meat habit immediately.
