The Earth Day diet
“To the editor:
Quick … what causes more harm to the environment: eating a burger or driving a Hummer? The answer might surprise you.
According to the United Nation’s groundbreaking 2006 report,”Livestock’s Long Shadow,” animal agriculture generates more greenhouse gases than all the cars, trucks, SUV’s, Hummers, planes and ships in the world — combined.
And the U.N. isn’t alone in touting this message. Scientists at the University of Chicago determined that switching to a vegan diet is more effective at countering greenhouse-gas emissions than switching to a hybrid car. And according to the Live Earth Handbook from the anti-global warming concerts that Al Gore helped organize, eating a plant-based diet is the “single most effective thing to you can do” to reduce your carbon footprint.
Environmental Defense recently reported that if every American substituted vegetarian foods for chicken in just one meal per week, the carbon dioxide savings would be the same as taking more than a half-million cars off U.S. roads. If every American went completely meat-free for one full day per week, the effect would be the same as taking 8 million cars off the roads.
So this Earth Day, why not make a pledge to try a vegan or vegetarian diet? You’ll be helping your health, preventing animal suffering and making a major contribution to fighting global warming, too!
