DIY Avocado Hair Mask

Today’s post isn’t a real food post, but it contains edible items… that counts, right?

Vegan Avocado Hair Mask

My hair is literally the worst for dry, split ends. At the same time, it’s super fine and too much conditioner makes it really heavy and oily and removes the little volume I can coax into it, so it’s a bit of a difficult customer. Last weekend, I felt like it really needed a deep treatment. Although no hair mask can repair damaged ends, the extra moisture can make them a bit more smooth and easy to deal with, tying you over until you can next afford a haircut. Which, in my case, is about once a year.

1 overripe avocado
1 tablespoon coconut oil
hairband
old towel

Method

Mash the avocado in a small bowl. Add the coconut oil and microwave for a minute, until the oil is melted. Stir until more or less smooth and apply to damp hair, making sure that the mixture isn’t too hot! Leave on for about 15 minutes and rinse. I had to shampoo a few times to make sure I didn’t have little green lumps in my locks…

Vegan MoFo 2014 | The VeganKind Box 11

No Vegan Month of Food on Moving Scouse could be complete without the most recent The VeganKind box review, could it? This box landed on my desk this morning and is jam-packed with all sorts of vegan goodies!

First up – my absolute favourite item. I’d read about the Ombar Organic Coco Mylk Bar (35g) a few times, but hadn’t seen one for sale anywhere. This is absolutely divine. It tastes creamy, with none of the waxy texture rice-based bars tend to have so often, and even contains a healthy dose of probiotics! Amazing!

Hoots Snacks Pickled Onion Flavour (full size) reminded me of the Bagel Chips I used to love when I was younger. Baked, multi seed chips are flavoured with, well, pickled onion, and they make an excellent afternoon snack! I did find the flavour a little bit odd though, so I would love to try some of the brand’s other flavours.

Do I even need to tell you how much I love my Bear snacks (full size)? I doubt it. These little paws are actually small flecks of fruit leather, delicious and containing absolutely no nasties! If I had kids, I would totally allow these as a treat!

Jake loves his spices, so he gets very excited whenever they’re included in the box. He added some of this Taste Magic BBQ Dust to our dinner, and it gave a wonderful smokey, spicy flavour that I really enjoyed (full size)!

I’d pretty much given up on natural deodorant, if I’m honest. Crystal sticks and the like just don’t work for me, and I was convinced that I’d tried everything going. This Skin Likes product, however, might be a game-changer (full size). I’ve mentioned a few times now that I’m trying to clean up my household, and a reliable green deodorant would be such a great thing to have around! Of course, I haven’t really had much time to try this, but it smells amazing and I’ll keep you posted!

Need I say much more about the Creative Nature Blissful Berry Snack Bars (full size)? I reviewed them a few days ago in this post, and I can confirm that they’re living up to expectations!

Last but not least, these little bag of Nothing But Pineapple & Grape Snack (full size)! In my last TVK review post, we came to the conclusion in the comments that the freeze-dried vegetables weren’t a great idea, but that the same concept with fruit would be amazing. What a coincidence, we were right! These are delicious and definitely something I would buy if it were readily available to me.

Are you a TVK subscriber? What did you think of this month’s box?

Warm Berries with Vegan White Chocolate Sauce

Lo and behold, I actually have a recipe for you today. I was reading one of my favourite blogs, Hello October, and Suzie was talking about a dessert she had in a restaurant that could easily be replicated at home – berries and white chocolate sauce. So obviously, I had to make it! It turns out it’s one of those recipes that taste amazing, but look absolutely horrific. It didn’t help that we ate later than I thought we would, and all the light had gone by the time I got round to photographing…. but anyway, excuses excuses! Because the chocolate sauce is made essentially from scratch, you can really play around with the nuances of flavour, adding less sugar, more vanilla, or different flavours entirely! Personally, I think cinnamon would make an excellent addition to this during the colder months. If you have all the ingredients on hand, this can be made within 10 minutes, making it ideal for those lazy cold winter evenings.

Ingredients (for 2 servings)

500g mixed frozen berries
1 pinch Truvia
40g cocoa butter
150ml vegan cream (I used Oatly)
1/4 cup powdered sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract

Method

1. Divide up the berries into two bowls, sprinkle with Truvia and microwave until warm. Alternatively, you can heat them up in a saucepan.

2. Heat up the cream in a small pan. Remove from heat and whist in vanilla, powdered sugar (I recommend starting with less) and cocoa butter.

3. Top the berries with the sauce and serve!

Vegan MoFo 2014 | Cookbook Sunday – The Oh She Glows Cookbook

This is a feature I haven’t really been writing regularly, but for the duration of Vegan MoFo, I’m bringing it back!

I think anyone interested in vegan cooking and clean eating has heard of Angela Liddon by now. She runs one of the most amazing blogs, Oh She Glows, which I find myself on at least once a day. Her recipes always work, they beautifully photographer and, to be honest, I don’t know why it took this long for her to get a book deal. She deserved on from day one.

I’ve been using her book frequently and it’s already had a bit of a run in with a water jug…. whoops. But to me, a tattered cookbook is a well-loved cookbook! Like her blog, this book has a clean design, gorgeous pictures on nearly every page (remember the days when vegan cookbooks had next to no photos at all?) and her recipes are well-structured and easy to follow.

What I love about this book is that everything just works. From overnight oats to gluten-free brownies, nothing has gone wrong so far and I’m fairly sure that it will stay that way. I also love that, although there are a fair few dessert recipes, many of them are still healthier than your average pudding recipes. Of course, we all now that I love the odd indulgent dessert, but I’ve really been trying to be healthier, fitter and all-round kinder to myself recently, so these are very welcome options.

Overall, I would definitely recommend this book to anyone interested in healthy, balanced vegan cooking. It also fits quite nicely into the Tone It Up nutrition concept, which I’m a big fan of.

Have you been bought Angela’s book? What did you think of it?
