Bettylicious Cooks

You’ll love this and will want to catch the next one:

Bettylicious Cooks is a 100% plant based food company. African, Creole, Soul Food cooked with love. Pop Up cafe, Event catering service & cooking classes.

Every weekend they do a popup cafe in Liverpool in which the Bettylicious cooks prepare a tasty vegan menu.

A quick bio before I tell you where their next popup cafe is going to be:

“We create tasty dishes that reflect the diversity, culture and heritage of the origins of African food and it’s dominant influence throughout the world and cultures.

‘Bettylicious Cooks’ came about whilst Betty began developing her meat based food menus and was diagnosed with a condition she knew was linked to her excessive meat diet. She turned her eating habits around and took a predominantly plant based approach to healthy eating. Removing dairy products and meat and within 4 months noticed the changes were evident. Gradual weight loss, increased energy levels, regular menstrual cycles, more confidence and a more mindful approach to the health and well being of those around her.

‘I believe in a plant based diet because I see the benefits to my health and well being. I was a proper meat and chicken girl! How could I keep this transformation to myself’. I veganised my favourite African dishes, created new ones, researched some great vegan chefs, discovered well read African Food historians and shared my new creations among family and friends, the response was awesome. I switched my business ethos up and removed the meat and fish element. I’ve not looked back.”

So their next popup cafe event will be on Friday 20th November at the Cafe Kerouac on Smithdown Road. They will be there from 5pm until 11pm (last food orders at 10.30pm)

They (Betty) will announce the menu the Wednesday before on their Facebook event page.

We’ll be taking over the kitchen every Friday evening (ONLY) of Nov/Dec to bring you a small but seasonally selected African/Creole/Soul Food/Fusion PLANT BASED/VEGAN menu of mouth-watering starters, mains and sides as well as some winter comfort deserts to satisfy that sweet tooth. Of course our signature Jollof Rice and Groundnut stew will feature on our menu.

We will have a small selection of still drinks on sale including the Bettylicious Ginger & Sorrel juice. For those who like something a little stronger, BYOB! there will be a corkage charge per bottle.

If you can’t make it to that one there will be more popups on the following dates:

Fri 13th, Fri 20th, Fri 27th

Fri 4th, Fri 11th, Fri 18th

So basically every Friday for the next few weeks.

The Vegan Roadshow

Upcoming Event: The Fat Gay Vegan is the organizer of the ongoing Vegan Roadshow and there will be a stop next month at Maguire’s Pizza Bar:

The Vegan Roadshow

Vegan Roadshow feat. Love Like Hate (AUS)
Maguire’s Pizza Bar
Liverpool United Kingdom

July 27th

Love Like Hate are a dark pop duo that has temporarily escaped their hometown of Brisbane, Australia in order to play a select number of shows around the UK.

Music website Louder Than War wrote of the band:

“Great band name, great record sleeve, there’s a bit of a buzz about Love Like Hate in Australia at the moment and it’s pretty easy to see why. They have a brand of pop that is both catchy and slightly off kilter and it’s nice.

The female duo of Heather Cheketri and Sonja Ter Horst make appealing noises which are a hundred times better than the majority of the trite in the charts and clearly have an ear for a catchy tune or two.”

As part of Vegan Roadshow, Love Like Hate are touring the country with blogger and event planner Fat Gay Vegan. Each stop of the tour will feature a merchandise and information desk by activist group Animal Equality.

Vegan pizza is available from Maguires before the show.

This is a powerhouse indie pop show with a twist.

Listen to live music and support an independent Australian band on only their second ever UK tour.

Egg Cafe pop up restaurant at Nook & Cranny

Posted on

Heads up all you Scousers, veggie or not – you need to get yourself over to Nook & Cranny on Bold Street on Wednesday 19th November at 6.30pm. Why ? Because the Egg Cafe will be there for one night only…

Press release:

Pop in for a seven course supper as Egg Cafe takes over Nook & Cranny for one night only

For one night only, Nook & Cranny’s brand new event space will be taken over by Egg Cafe as it boasts a 7-course global banquet. The upcoming pop-up restaurant has already attracted enthusiastic foodies from all corners of the region with a show-stopping vegetarian and vegan menu to whet the appetite and truly tickle the tastebuds.

Nook & Cranny relaunched with a bang on the retail scene last month as the brand expanded into a sizeable shop on Liverpool’s bustling Bold Street. A Dia de los Muertos themed press launch saw local artists, fellow independents and media alike come together at the unit, which now houses a unique in-store events venue.

The brand new space will play host to a varied event series developed by the newly expanded team at Nook & Cranny. The ongoing programme recently featured a highly successful terrarium workshop and continues with a guest appearance from the city’s leading vegan and vegetarian diner, Egg Cafe.

A refreshing alternative to the myriad of burger joints and ‘meateries’, Egg Cafe caters for those who are more herbivore-inclined. Building up a loyal fan base on its spicy bean burgers and hearty soups, tucked away in a Newington attic, this rustic establishment is adored by regulars and visitors alike.

Just as is customary in the bohemian restaurant, guests are welcome to BYOB and bring along their own tipple of choice to enjoy with the exclusively designed menu. Dishes will include ingredients from a variety of continents, cultures and cuisines and aims to open the minds of devout meat-eaters and continue to delight regulars on the vegetarian dining scene.

Manager of Egg Cafe, Cyrus Gerrish, said:

“We are excited and honoured to be hosting our pop up restaurant at Nook & Cranny. It will be a great way for people to introduce friends to vegetarian food and broaden their culinary horizons by sampling different foods in cosy, informal setting. The menu takes influence from a number of cuisines from around the world. There is something for everybody as all of the dishes are delicious!”

Cyrus added:

“It’s great to work with other independents in Liverpool. Egg Cafe will be joining the Independent Liverpool card very soon so keep an eye on the website.”

For more information or to book your place go to Tickets cost £19.80 and will be allocated on a first come first served basis so catch ‘em while you can!

The National Disgrace

There will be a demonstration outside of the Aintree racecourse on Saturday 6th April, from 11.00am to 2.00pm – the day of the Grand National.

Info from FAACE:

Demo against the Grand National – April 2013

A demonstration will take place on the day of the Grand National, Saturday 6th April from 11am to 2pm, opposite the main entrance to the Aintree Racecourse on the A59. This is in front of the Aintree railway station entrance.

Following the death of two horses in 2011, cosmetic changes were made to the fences. This did not prevent the deaths Of ‘According To Pete’ and ‘Synchronised’ in the 2012 Grand National.

For the 2013 race, further very minimal changes to the fences have been made. The start will be 90 yards nearer the first fence so the horses will not be travelling as fast when they hit it, but the field has not been reduced so 40 horses will arrive at the same time. Another possible recipe for disaster!

Fight Against Animal Cruelty in Europe – FAACE – Animal Aid and others will be there.

Please join us and swell our numbers if you can. It will make a difference. Please spread the word as much as you can.

We need to stop this carnage.
