2013 Worldwide Vegan Bake Sale

Posted on

Hi, this is Gary Loewenthal with A Well-Fed World , and I want to invite you to participate in the fifth annual Worldwide Vegan Bake Sale (WVBS), April 20 through April 28, 2013.

The WVBS was named “Veg Event of the Year” by VegNews Magazine, and was covered by CNN.com (www.cnn.com/2010/LIVING/04/30/vegan.bake.sale/).

The idea is simple: Groups across the world hold vegan bake sales any time between April 20 and April 28. Participating groups can do whatever they want with the proceeds.

So far, groups around the world have raised close to 200,000 dollars via the WVBS for various worthy causes. Your bake sale can be a fundraiser for your group, or proceeds can go to a local or international charity – you choose.

www.veganbakesale.org has all the details, including a signup form, a schedule of participating bake sales, tons of bake sale tips, and links to thousands of vegan baking recipes. If you can bake, you can bake vegan. The www.veganbakesale.org web site has handy vegan baking tips to get you started.

Holding a bake sale may be easier than you think. Once you finalize your location, the rest is relatively easy. Again, the veganbakesale.org web site has lots of help.

A Well-Fed World coordinates global publicity for the event, and we leverage the event as best we can to get positive press about the bake sales and about the health, environmental, and ethical benefits of a plant-based diet.

You may be able to get funding for your bake sale! Email grants@awfw.org with details of your event to see if you qualify.

The sign-up form is at http://www.veganbakesale.org/veganbakesale/vbs-signup.html. For questions, or to sign up if you hate forms, please contact info@veganbakesale.org. We’re also on Facebook, and on twitter as wwveganbakesale.

We hope that participating in the WVBS is an exciting and fulfilling way to raise funds, and to be part of something bigger which helps the earth, animals, and humans. The camaraderie among the diverse participants across the globe is amazing and inspiring.

Sun Sept 9th – The Summer Cup

The Kasimier outside

» Something spotted by Steve, one of our mailing/discussion list members about an event being run by MelloMello:

“I was in Mello Mello this evening after work for my pre match meal. When I was leaving the girl who was working there drew my attention they have to a flier for the above that they have organised. Its a tenner for a picnic basket (vegan, gluten available) and complimentary cocktail included. There will be live music, traditional garden games, bunting, plaid and much merriment. Its billed as a Summer picnic but on that particular date, that could be viewed as a little optimistic.”

The 10 day forecast is looking good at the moment. But as we know that can change in an instant.

Tickets can be purchased here. (£10.00 or £7.00 concessions) or via MelloMello I imagine…

When ?

Saturday 4th August to Saturday 18th August 2012

More info:

Vegan Camp is a friendly and enjoyable annual social gathering for singles, couples and families.

Each year we choose a new location with people coming to stay from day visits to the full two weeks.

This year, the location is Ormside, which is near Appleby-in-Westmorland, Cumbria. It’s from Sat 4th to Sat 18th August. All welcome – any period of stay.

Most stay at the site itself but some stay in luxury holiday caravans on site or in nearby accommodation such as hotels, guesthouses or hostels and visit during the day.

We usually have between 60 and 130 people come to stay over the 2 week period, including many new faces and some of us who have been coming for 10 years or more.

We often have communal meals (sometimes with a talent show), sing songs, camp fires (if allowed) and just general lounge-abouts. We enjoy going on outings to the beach, walks in the countryside, having picnics, and visiting local places of interest.

We are a diverse group with ages from babies up to those in their 70’s, singles, couples and families.

Some people come every year and some come when we are in their area. What is consistent is the friendly, helpful and fun atmosphere, which you will find at these camps.

More info:

The International Animal Rights Gathering is an annual event which brings together activists from all over the world for a weekend of workshops, talks, discussions, films, information stalls, entertainment and networking. The aim of the Gathering is to promote and improve co-operation and co-ordination between activists from many different countries, with the aim of building a strong coherent global movement to fight animal exploitation and spread compassion. This is particularly important bearing in mind that most animal exploitation and abuse is an international business which operates across international borders, so it’s vital that we as a movement also learn to think and work globally too.

Join us in Poland for the 14th annual Animal Rights Gathering.

12th May - West Lancashire Vegan Fair

What ?   The West Lancashire Vegan Fair

When ?   Saturday 12th May – from 11am to 5pm.

Where ?   Lancaster Friends Meeting House, Lancaster

More info:

“Whether you are a vegan, or a vegetarian or omnivore who wants to learn more about veganism, the 2012 West Lancashire Vegan Fair is an excellent place to do so, as it will be the biggest vegan event which has ever been organised in Lancashire.

After 2 successful events near Blackpool in 2009 and 2010 which were featured on BBC Radio Lancashire and in 2 local newspapers, and which were each attended by several hundred people, West Lancashire Vegan Fair moves to a much bigger venue, 2 floors of almost the whole of a building, which gives us a lot of extra space for more stalls, a separate room for a vegan cafe and children’s area, and a separate room for speakers.

This year’s attractions include:

  • 50+ stalls over 2 floors
  • Free vegan food
  • Vegan cookery demos
  • Speakers
  • Free recipe booklets
  • Vegan cafe
  • Children’s area

The fair takes place at Lancaster Friends Meeting House, Meeting House Lane, Lancaster, LA1 1TX on Saturday May the 12th from 11am till 5pm. The venue is next door to Lancaster Railway Station.

Horse Deaths On The Racecourse

Grand National

On the first day of the Cheltenham Festival, three horses were killed…

From Animal Aid:

“The Cheltenham Festival, which has killed nine horses in the last five years, produced three more fatalities on the opening day of the 2012 event.

The victims were 11-year-old Scotsirish, 13-year-old Garde Champetre and 7-year-old Educated Evans. The first two, were both racing in the gruelling 3-mile 7-furlong cross-country handicap chase. Educated Evans had been entered into the final race of the day – the two-and-a-half mile novice chase.”

This time next month there will be another big race meeting here in Liverpool.

Last year at the same meeting – three horses were killed…

Merseyside Animal Rights will be staging a Grand National Demo on SATURDAY APRIL 14th

“A demonstration against the Grand National and horseracing in general will take place at the Aintree racetrack from 11.00 to 14.00 on Saturday 14th of April the day of the Grand National. We stand opposite the main entrance to the Aintree Racecourse on the A59. This is in front of the Aintree railway station entrance.

We will be there to protest against the cruelty to horses in the Grand National in particular and horse racing in general. Any one who feels that horseracing is wrong and is prepared to stand up and be counted with like-minded people.

Just turn up and be there. This is a peaceful demo. Bring a placard if you can but this is not necessary. We are able to talk to, or at the race-goers, with sometimes unusual responses! We have an arrangement with the police to stand in a prominent place with a good police presence so you will be quite safe.”

Video from a demo staged in 2010, you might recognise a couple of people:

Additional in a case of art imitating life: Three horses were killed during the filming of the U.S television show “Luck”, which stars Dustin Hoffman.
